by Antonio Bellomi and Franco Giambalvo

Today Udolpho did not feel like doing anything. The incessant buzzing he had felt in his head since the day he was born sixteen years ago, was stronger, perhaps because of the heat, and it had hampered him from scrawling on his drawing book as he was used to doing.
After half an hour of inane scrawling, he made a ball of the used sheets and threw them in the basket. He strongly felt like crying. At the end of the week, his guardian, Uncle Karl, would come back from the city and would ask him what he had done in the meantime and he had done just nothing. He had spent his time lying on the grass in front of his cabin in the mountains that Uncle Karl had kindly offered him. He had spent hours looking at the sun, the meadows, the woods nearby, the birds soaring high in the sky. And when he admired this wonderful sight of gold, green and blue hues, even the buzzing in his head seemed to calm down.
He could do nothing for the buzzing. He had been born with it. Always with this whirring in the head that prevented him from focusing on things, It even prevented him from speaking normally. He still remembered how they scoffed at him at school shouting at him “Idiot! Idiot!” in chorus.
Uncle Karl, on the other hand, was a great and kindly man. He owned an art gallery in the city and drove a big fire-red car he called ‘Ferrari’. When he drove up to the cabin though, he used another big angular car he called lenrova or something like that.
Uncle Karl was very kind to him. He bartered his drawings for cans of peas, beans, spaghetti, tomatoes, oil and many other things.
Udolpho looked at the door of the cabin and sighed heavily. He should come back to drawing to make Uncle Karl happy. When Uncle Karl was particularly pleased with some drawing, he brought it back and asked him to paint it onto a canvas with oil colours. But he did not like oil colours, he preferred to use the crayon onto a drawing paper.
While he had a strong sense of duty, he didn’t feel any inclination for work. He went back to the cabin, put his mountain boots on, grabbed his alpenstock and decided to climb up to the San Giuliano Lake. It was a hike neither short nor easy, but it would loosen his muscles and relax him. Perhaps it could bring him back a desire for working.
The hike took him two hours with his rhythmic mountaineer pace, the kind of pace that appears so slow but takes you very far, and when he arrived he was not even tired. After all, he had been used to these hikes for many years now.
When he got over the last ridge, the majestic and mysterious San Giuliano Lake appeared in front of him. It was not a large water expanse, but it had a royal look with the crown of rocks that ran around it, and the thick mantle of heather and rhododendron that here and there came down to the water’s edge,
Udolpho had a favourite place. Hastening to it, he sat down on a rock overlooking the lake and slipped his rucksack from his shoulders.
Respirò a pieni polmoni. L’aria era profumata, era però anche elettrica. Era sempre quella l’impressione che provava quando veniva in quel posto. E proprio per questo gli piaceva. He breathed deeply. The mountain air smelled of flowers but it also had a sort of electric quality. This was always the impression he felt when he went up to the lake, and the reason why he liked it there.
He opened the rucksack and took out bread and cheese. For drink he had a canteen he had filled with the fresh water that spurted from a spring near his cabin.
After eating the bread and cheese he took an orange and peeled it. Since nobody had taught him good manners he threw down the first rind in the void in front of him
Subito dopo si levò un grido indignato. «Ehi, che modi sono questi!» Immediately an angry shout came up from below. “Hey, what do you think you’re doing, you clod?”
Udolpho started; he was not scared by the shouting but was surprised to hear a human voice in a place he thought to be deserted. A woman voice. A young woman voice.
«Chi è?» chiese con voce incerta. “Who’s there?” he asked uncertainly.
He heard a sound of pebbles being trodden upon and at the end of the small path below him that led to the lake, a slim figure appeared.
The slim, smooth, perfectly thrilling figure of a young woman. Stark naked. Udolpho did not even know why the vision enthused him so much, but it excited him a lot! He had never seen such a girl and, above all, he had never seen a young woman naked. Nor never thought that such nudity could be so thrilling. But it was, it was!
Udolpho blinked his eyes in surprise, gripped by feelings he was unable to define. His blood had sort of stirred up, but he could not understand why. It was a strange sensation, a kind of itching inside his belly. It was the sudden desire to touch her, caress her skin, smell her, immerse himself in her.
Udolpho had become part of his surroundings and of this body so wonderfully beautiful, but he was rudely awakened from his reverie by the lithe woman’s next harsh words: “I am speaking to you, clod!” she said, shaking her copper-red hair that sparkled like flames. “Did nobody teach you that garbage must never be thrown away in the mountains—but must be collected in a sack and taken back home?”
Continuava a guardarla incuriosito, distaccato? coinvolto? meravigliato? Udolpho looked at her, surprised. Nobody had ever explained him such things. But, actually, he was not so shocked by her words: already he was forgetting them. He kept looking at her with amazed curiosity. He had an overpowering impulse to take these breasts in his hands. He spasmodically desired to lie down on this tanned body that shined like ancient gold. He wanted to take the buds of her breasts between his lips, these buds that had the colour and the hardness of spring strawberries. He wanted to embrace her slim waist, while lying down on the grass, and then turn onto her with a delicate somersault. He wanted to touch her copper-red triangle between her legs with his lips…an all of this without any real reason…why on earth should he think to do such a thing?
“Hey, you don’t seem to pay attention to what I’m saying,” said the girl from below. “Haven’t you ever seen a naked woman bathing in the sun? Perhaps I’d better put something on.”
As quick as a flash of sun on a blade she had disappeared behind the bend of the path and a few seconds later she had reappeared beside him, enveloped in a pareo. But where had she come from? The pareo was rather too transparent for Udolpho not to be thrilled as he had been before. Or rather, more than before. The red, erected nipples showed in their glory through the flimsy cloth. Her slim, long legs were still naked and looked even more enticing. Now, for the first time, Udolpho feared that this woman could be dangerous. What he felt did not seem normal. It was a feeling so intense he had difficulty to keep it in check. Now the woman was also smiling and this generated an incredible joy in him, which entangled every fibre of his being. He would have never thought of such a word as complicity, but this was just the thought that excited him. Even if he could not say what it wasActually, Udolpho had not seen her come up the slope. Now that he could see her at close range he observed her lovely, regular face, with full lips and emerald eyes
«Hai fatto in fretta,» disse Udolfo. «Ti muovi bene in montagna.» “You came up in a jiffy,” said Udolpho. “You move easily in the mountains.”
Ora ne era certo.«Ma torniamo a noi. The girl giggled. “You are funny. Do you think to be the only one to be able to walk around in the mountains? Everyone has their own ways,” Udolpho could smell her scent. No, it was not an artificial perfume, it was just her odour: it had an unknown mineral scent, but not at all unpleasant. That scent mixed well with the smell of nature around them. And Udolpho felt something between his legs. Oh, now he was so certain that the woman was dangerous.“Let’s come back to us,” she went on. “Why are you acting like a pig in this wonderful place? The garbage is to be taken back home.”
«Nessuno me l’ha mai detto,» rispose Udolfo, incerto. “Nobody ever told me,” Udolpho replied, uncertainly. He did not understand a word of what the girl said, but while she was standing so near to him he felt as if the air sizzled with electricity. “All right, I’ll do as you say, then.” He paused an instant, still unable to avert his eyes from her wonderful legs and asked: “What’s your name?”
«Curioso!» She stared at him with her emerald eyes where he could see a dance of enticing sparks and pressed the point of his nose with her forefinger. “Nosey!”
«Io Udolfo,» ribatté lui. “I’m Udolpho,” he replied.
La ragazza scoppiò a ridere. «No, non è il mio nome. Curioso sei tu. Io mi chiamo Uja.» She laughed. “No, this is not my name. You are a nosey man. My name is Uja.”
Udolpho looked at her, surprised. “I never met someone called Uja. Is it a new name?”
«Nuovo? Oh, no!» “A new name? No, not at all!” Uja laughed heartily and looked really amused at Udolpho enchantment by her silvery laugh. And more than that he was fascinated by the gentle sway of the breasts under the pareo. He would have liked to touch them, but he did not dare even though the temptation was almost irresistible.
«No, non è nuovo,» affermò Uja. “No, it is not a new name,” said Uja. “It is at least nine thousand years old in my country.”
Ventimila anni? Ti prendi gioco di me.» Nine thousand yeas? In her country? Udolpho did not know any village or town nearby that could be so ancient. Uja was certainly pulling his leg, He turned his back to her, sulking. “You are like everybody else. You are just making fun of me.”
There were a few seconds of silence, only broken by the screeching of the birds flying over the lake. Udolpho, still sulking, looked at the birds to avoid looking at her and instantly the buzzing in his head seemed to become stronger. Then a small, soft hand touched his shoulder. The hand was pleasantly fresh, and soft as a feather cushion.
«Udolfo, ascoltami. Nessuno ti prende in giro. Perché non mi racconti qualcosa di te?» “Udolpho, Listen to me. Nobody is making fun of you. Why don’t you tell me something of yourself?”
Udolpho turned. Uja’s eyes were glittering like emerald with a fire burning inside. And in that glaring emerald green Udolpho felt like drowning.
E cominciò a parlare. And he began talking
When they went down to the cabin it was just becoming dark. Over their heads rolled the thunders of a mountain storm that would quickly break out with all its fury.
The first gusts of wind loaded with rain plunged upon them just when they were about twenty metres from the cabin and a couple of seconds later a furious storm broke out that soaked them through.
“Just in time!” shrilled Uja, throwing her small rucksack onto a battered sofa. She also discarded her soaked pareo on the floor and naked as she was she ran to the window. Udolpho could not restrain himself from staring at her perfect body. He could see her silhouette against the windows though which a milky light filtered. Her buttocks were full and ripe, between her thighs filtered a thin blade of light just as it was right to be. When she partially turned, he could see one of her perfect, round breasts, a sort of hillock upon which a hard nipple stood gloriously erected.
«Vieni a vedere. È uno spettacolo meraviglioso. Desideravo tanto vedere un autentico temporale.» “Come here and see. It is a wonderful view. I desired so much to see a real storm.”
Udolpho would have liked to tell her that this view was rather common to him and that all storms looked the same, but he remained silent. For him a storm was only an annoyance that forced him to stay inside. What was actually strange, though, was that even if in the mountains the sudden storms are rather frequent, his experience said that today it should not have rained. But that was not important now that Uja was there with him!
I loro visi l’uno accanto all’altro. Generally if he could not understand something he became moody. But today it was different. On the contrary the presence of Uja made him unusually euphoric. Their faces were almost touching. Udolpho could feel the slight warmness her face emanated mixed with that fragrance he could not define but that reminded him of springtime.
Uja moved slightly and thus she rubbed her hip against Udolpho, who received a strong electric shock. Udolpho was thunderstruck and for a moment the buzzing—that buzzing!—he always had in his head vanished instantly. He could not understand what had happened to him.
Meanwhile all the fury of hell had been unleashed outside. Violent gusts bent the top of the trees that snapped back upright as soon as the wind subsided. The rain poured down with the violence of an overfed torrent. Brooks and streams flowed impetuously all around the cabin, becoming every instant bigger and bigger and the path in front of the cabin had become a muddy swamp. Then the hailstorm arrived and big pellets of ice thrashed the trees around the cabin and hammered its roof with an obsessive hellish rhythm.
«Sembra la fine del mondo,» commentò Uja. “It sounds like the end of the world,” said Uja.
Udolpho turned away from the window and lighted an oil lamp. He would not generally use it, because he went to bed early at night and also because uncle Karl was not lavish with the kerosene. But this was a special night and he wanted to have the house lighted. He wanted a lot of light to have Uja’s eyes sparkle like gems.
«Mangiamo qualcosa?» propose Udolfo. “Would you like some supper?” asked Udolpho. He had strongly wished that Uja came to his cabin, but now that she was here he had no idea what to do.
Uja si voltò. «Che cosa c’è di buono in casa?» Uja turned to him. “Do you have something good?”
«Il solito,» rispose Udolfo. «Pane nero confezionato, formaggio, salame, frutta. “The usual things,” Udolpho replied. “Black bread, cheese, salami, some fruit. And we can also make a maize porridge on the fire.” He pointed to the fireplace were there was no fire at the moment. “You may not believe me, but I am very good at cooking on the fire. I can prepare a maize porridge we can eat with cheese.”
Uja’s eyes glittered. She approached him and grabbed his hands, making him fly around. “Porridge and cheese! In a mountain cabin in the middle of a tempest! What can be more romantic?”
Udolfo aggrottò la fronte. «Romantico?» Udolpho scowled. “Romantic?” This was a word he could not understand well. But Uja’s hands were clasping his and transmitted him something that thrilled him and totally damped the buzzing in his head. And that was wonderful!
He suddenly felt himself full of energy. “Let’s get to it, then!” he exclaimed. “It won’t take long. You get the cheese in the larder, I’ll light the fire and fill the cauldron with water.”Uja seemed to feel the cold now: she walked away from the window, clasping her arms around her naked body and picked up the pareo from the floor. For some mysterious reason it was dry, now. When she donned it, Udolpho realized the cloth looked different too. Now it was a rather heavy dress, the colour of the sky, with a deep neckline that exalted the breasts and the skirt was very short. It looked very unusual to him, but Udolpho did not really know a great lot about the way women dressed. It would be logic also to ask himself where she could have found her light-blue high-heeled shoes!
Before going out in the morning Udolpho had filled two big water tanks, so he was lucky he should not need to go out under the rain to fetch water at the spring. He also had a small supply of wood inside, so he was not compelled to use the wood logs he had piled up under the roof beside the porch.
When Udolpho had said he was a good cook, he had not lied. Shortly, the fire crackled in the fireplace, the water boiled and the porridge was poured on a big wooden chopping board.
This was the first time Udolpho had guests in his cabin, if you didn’t count uncle Karl, and it was a new experience for him. Everything seemed to different, so sweet, so cozy to him, something which reminded him of earlier times he had forgotten for so many, many years, when there was a small, silent woman that cared for him and called him “Udo, my little Udo,” and then kept crying. She was always crying. Who knew why? But everything was so good then, he cherished those times, even if he could not say why.
Outside, the storm was in full rage and ice pellets bombarded the roof as if they wanted to punch holes in the corrugated sheet plates, which Udolpho himself had reinforced with big stones. But the two young people seemed oblivious to the storm and paid their attention only to the porridge, the salami, the cheese and the fruit. Udolpho ate and talked, and talked…while Uja was mostly listening to him, with her big blazing eyes that seemed to read inside him. And once again, as he had already done up there in the mountains, Udolpho told her all about his life. How he had found himself alone and how Uncle Karl had taken care of him and had bought him the cabin where he lived, drawing and painting.
“You paint?” Uja had asked him up there at the San Giuliano Lake, and now she asked him if he had something to show her.Udolpho cleared the table and laid down the drawings he had drawn during the week and the two oil paintings he was completing as Uncle Karl had ordered him to do.
Uja studied them in a sort of reverent silence and Udolpho was struck by her attention. He did not think somebody could be so much interested in his works. In Uja’s eyes shone an eerie, almost magical light. And Udolpho thought he would have liked to kiss her wonderful eyes.
“Did you really do it yourself?” Uja asked at last, when she raised her head after examining the drawings and the paintings in every minute detail. Her emerald eyes were sparkling with a light that Udolpho had not noticed before.
He looked at her uneasily before answering. Why so many questions? Why did these drawings look so interesting to her? Drawing was the only thing he was able to do. At least this was what he had always heard from everybody.
Uja picked up one of the oil paintings, one he had not finished yet, and pushed this under his nose. The painting depicted a mountain storm with water roaring down the rocks, the gusts of wind that bent the treetops, the black swollen clouds that looked like ancient horse-mounted warriors of two medieval armies. All in all, the scene looked very similar to the storm that was raging now outside the cabin.
«L’hai fatto proprio tu?» ripeté Uja. «È tutta opera tua?» “Did you really do it yourself?” Uja asked again. “Is everything done by you?”
Is this so strange? Udolpho thought. Sure, he had done everything himself, and slightly annoyed he confirmed it again.
“So many questions!” he exclaimed. “I told you I like to draw and paint. Uncle Karl exchanges my drawings for everything I need.”
Uja went close to him and put her hands on his shoulders, while her emerald eyes pierced his own eyes lovingly. “I didn’t want to doubt you, Udo,” she said. “But you are so good—a real artist. Has uncle Karl never told you?”
Udolpho shook his head. Her hands on his shoulders were giving him an electric shock that hampered him from thinking. He felt a terrifying turmoil inside, he was pierced by a multitude of unknown overpowering sensations that he felt being born for the first time in his life.
«Io… non lo sapevo,» balbettò. «Dici davvero che sono bravo?» “I… I did not know,” he stammered. “Are you really saying I am good?”
Uja’s face was very close to him, now. She embraced him and put her lips on his. Udolpho felt the pressure of her breasts, free under the dress. Then she gently slipped her tongue between his lips. Udolpho did not know what it meant, but he liked it; it was so pleasurable, so intimate. Nobody had taught him anything, but he reacted the same way, he rubbed his body against Uja’s body with the clear, inexplicable intention of making her belly feel his own hard growing tumescence. Uja did not react with a horrified cry as he had feared; she only uttered a soft moan, She had her eyes half closed and her lips slightly apart.
Dentro il suo corpo avvertiva un rimescolamento sconosciuto, tensioni ignote, pulsioni travolgenti Her breast was so soft and Udo felt longingly for the pressure of her hard nipples against him. He could not understand anything now. He felt an overwhelming turmoil of unknown urges.
Uja kissed him again and Udolpho reacted enthusiastically to this new play. Nobody had ever told him how to, but he had no difficulty in responding. While still kissing him, Uja laid a hand on his breast and began unbuttoning his shirt. Udolpho let her do it. It was so nice to feel such intimacy. And the buzzing in his head was attenuating… “Now I want to see you naked,” she said.
Cominciò a slacciarli. Udolpho’s hand instinctively went up to Uja’s bodice and realized it had buttons too. Strange, he had not seen them on the pareo, nor when he had seen it donned as a dress. But was it so important? He began to unbutton them. And the play became more and more interesting and frantic. More and more mysterious and uncontrollable. Udolphe was driven by an unknown instinct which had suddenly awaken inside him and made him perform acts and actions which he had never even suspected to exist.
Shortly they were both naked and dropped onto Udo’s cot. Uja lowered her head and kissed his pectorals, then her lips lowered below among the hair he had down there, and closed around his erected member with delicious sweetness. He could not believe that such a delicious pleasure could exist!
Come era possibile? “Udo…” Uja moaned after a little while as if to ask for something that Udolpho did not know how to give at the moment. She began to help him, but now he had found the right way himself, by instinct, and their bodies mingled in repeated love plays. Uja prompted him with her elastic body so vibrant with passion and Udolpho reacted with all the explosive energy of a young body that had been restrained for too long a time. He slipped into her tight vagina quite naturally and found a delicious hot wetness around his hard member. He plunged and withdraw, and plunged again, as if he had always done it for ages, and Uja reacted arching her body, contracting her inner muscles and moaning like a kitten, till the exalting moment, after minutes or millennia of exhausting caresses and throbbing panting, Udolpho was overwhelmed by a new, unrestrained sensation: was it possible that this experience still had something unknown in store for him? It was something that came up from his belly, a hot torrent he thought to be only his, but that was not at all so, because, though he did not know how, he could project that hotness toward the border that separated their bodies and minds. Uja emitted a hoarse cry that for an instant even overwhelmed the roaring of the thunders outside. He felt one moment charged with energy and a moment after totally swept away by a languid happiness and fully satiated. How was it possible?
He did not realize the passing of time, but suddenly he opened his eyes because a ray of sunshine fell on his face. He opened his eyes wide and for an instant he was dazed, as it happens when you suddenly awake from sleep. Then he found himself naked on his cot and everything came back to his mind.
«Uja!» “Uja!”
He sat up with a cry. In a fraction of time he relived the previous night of love. He jumped out of the cot just when the door of the cabin opened and Uja appeared, naked as a nymph of the forest, dripping water around her. She had clearly plunged in the little lake behind the cabin.
“Uja!” Udolpho exclaimed, while he admired her ecstatically. It was just then that he realized there was something different. The buzzing that had always accompanied him since he was born had completely disappeared. He knew with unwavering certainty that it had disappeared forever.
Uja regarded him with her shining emerald eyes so full of sweetness. “So long, Udolpho,” she said. “It was a wonderful night, our wonderful night. A night I will remember for ever.”
“Why? Where do you want to go?” Udolpho cried and ran to embrace her again and relive the enchanted moments of the night.
«No, Udo. Non ti avvicinare. Io devo andare. Devo tornare al mio paese.» But Uja stopped him with a wave of the hand before he reached her. “No, Udo. Don’t come nearer. I must go. I must go back to my country.”
«Ma io posso seguirti,» protestò Udolfo. «Staremo sempre insieme e ci ameremo tutte le notti e tutti i giorni.» “But I can follow you,” Udolpho protested. “We will be always together and we will love each other every night and every day.”
A faint smile appeared on Uja’s lips. “It is not possible, Udo. There is still one thing I have not yet told you. I am not from this Earth. And I must go back to own planet up there. The time of the alignment has almost expired and there won’t be a second time for me. Only once in our lives can I and my sisters reach the Earth to be satiated with the love of a man.”
Udolfo rimase impietrito. Qualcosa sembrava bloccarlo e impedirglielo. Udolpho was thunderstruck. He would have liked to run up to Uja and embrace her and prevent her from leaving, but he could not. Something seemed to hold him where he stood.
«Addio Udolfo. È stata bella la nostra notte.» Two drops of tears shone in Uja’s eyes. “I had come to give you my last kiss before leaving,” she said. Then she lifted her hand to her lips and sent a tender, heartbreaking, distressed farewell kiss. “Fare thee well, Udolpho. How wonderful our night was!”
“I won’t ever forget it,” Udolpho could only say, stunned as he was for the love he had lost just after finding it.
Uja’s eyes glowed. “Of this I am absolutely sure. With time you will better understand what I mean. And this will be my parting gift.”
She turned, framed in the light of the sun that poured in from outside and her slim naked body became instantly hazy and rotating on its axis, then it shrank to a tapering spindle and became a small bright point that hurtled up into the sky, leaving a wake of sparkles behind, which quickly faded away.
«Uja…» pronunciò Udolfo a bassa voce. “Uja…” murmured Udolpho brokenly.
E sarebbero stati felici… no, non era giusto. He went up to the door and looked at the part of the sky where his love had disappeared. Two big tear drops ran down his cheeks. No, it was not right. He could have lived with Uja till the end of his days, love her till the end of their days. They would have been happy…no, it was not right.
Passarono molti minuti e Udolfo continuò a guardare il cielo, senza pensare, annichilito. Many minutes ticked away while Udolpho kept looking at the sky.
Then he recovered when a croaking crow flew in front of him, under the roof of the porch, and perched on a rafter.
Udolpho shook his head as if he were awaking from a dream and felt everything was different around him, in him. The haunting obsessive buzzing that had tormented him all his life had disappeared, as he had already noted this morning. But, above all, now he could see things with absolute clarity. The world was not so hazy and inexplicable any more.Everything was clear, precise, every piece of his incomplete life had precisely fallen to its right place.
Anche lo zio Karl. Uncle Karl too.
Quanto aveva guadagnato coi suoi quadri, tenendolo relegato in quella baracca? How much had he earned with his paintings, keeping him prisoner in the cabin? He could not imagine, but very soon he would know. He would go down in the valley and would meet him and demand a full accounting. He was sure he had been robbed blind by his ‘affectionate’ guardian.
Now he could understand what Uja had meant with her parting words. He understood what was the farewell gift she had given him.
Definitivamente. Nobody would ever run after him in the streets shouting “Idiot, idiot!” That part of his life was closed. Forever.
He looked up to the sky again and threw a kiss to the great void.
«Grazie, Uja, strega marziana.» “Thank you, Uja, my beloved visitor.”
